Make your own poi!

I'm sure lots of you have been getting crafty over the past few weeks, so here is another craft idea to add to your list. Some of you will have had a go at making poi with Whaea Hinehau and Whaea Ngarimu last year, but it takes lots of practise to make the perfect poi! Christchurch City Libraries released this activity idea for the school holidays, and it looks like lots of fun. Give it a go, and then with your finished poi, try the poi drill in the video below!

ANZAC Day

ANZAC day is an important day for many New Zealanders and Australians.  Understanding our history helps us to shape our future. Each year thousands of New Zealanders attend services across the country, acknowledging those who sacrificed for our freedom has become part of what we do each year.

Unfortunately, this year services and gatherings across the country have been canceled but people may find ways to commemorate in their own homes.

Here is a collection of ideas you might like to do at home with our Whanau to commemorate ANZAC Day since we can not attend parades and services this year.

Anzac Lanterns

A simple yet effective idea using old milk bottles, tea light candles and felt pens or paint. Please supervise children with candles and don't leave unattended.

Anzac Biscuits

Everyone loves an Anzac biscuit and the homemade ones taste the best.

You might have a special recipe from your nana which is fabulous.  Here is a link if you need a recipe to try. ANZAC biscuits

Poppy Wreath

this can be made using egg cartons (for the poppy) by cutting out each egg basket and then drawing some leaves to go behind it.  You can stick on to a paper plate to make it easier to get the shape and cut out the middle of the plate.

This is a clever idea using a red shopping bag (New World or Warehouse).

Poppies with stems can also be fun if you have a pipe cleaner or just use a stick form the garden.

Poppy Rocks

I love this idea, which I have to say is borrowed from a teacher in Auckland.  find a nice big rock and paint it white.  then on top paint a poppy.  Once finished you can seal the rock with varnish if you have any at home.  If not bring your rock to school once we return and I can varnish it for you.  If you want we could keep a collection at school to put under our flag pole each ANZAC day.

Recreate famous paintings at home!

If you're on Instagram, you may have already seen this viral challenge initiated by the Getty Museum. They have encouraged art lovers in lockdown to recreate their favourite art works using things from home. Below are some of my favourites so far, we'd love to see what you come up with too! Post to the Ararira Springs Facebook page with the painting you are recreating!

Activities you could try yourself:

1. Make a pop up book of animals in which an animal might move e.g when you open a page the giraffe's leg kicks.

Have a look at a pop up version of the book for examples.

2. Make up a dance that Gerald could do.

3. Research about giraffes. What do you like to eat, where do they live? You could make a poster or a book to show what you find out or make a digital presentation to share.

4. Make a dancing giraffe using the template attached.  Join together with split pins or one corner of a staple.

5. Make a hand print giraffe

6. Make an animation of a dancing animal.  You could narrate the story yourself and add in some animation.  If you have scratch you could make a scratch animation.

Upcycling Milk Containers

We can't recycle at the moment so why not try to give your milk containers a second life and you recycle them.

Plant Containers.

Try growing some plants in the containers. Great for herbs or small plants. Think about which vegetables you could grow over winter.

Sandpit or Garden Trowel

Cut the bottom off your container and make a shovel for the sandpit.  Remember to leave the lid on so the sand does not escape.  Great for the garden too.

Pencil Storage Container

Keep all your pens and pencils eat and tidy in your room while learning at home.  You can even decorate the containers with your felts to match your room.

Easter Egg Collection Basket

Easter Bunny may be busy this year but if you are lucky enough for him to visit your place you could make a collection basket to get the eggs.  

Car Garages

If you love to play with small cars then why not make a set of garages or buildings for a small town.  You could make a whole city of buildings and tunnels and places to hide or toys!

For the big milk drinkers or the really ambitious you could make an igloo!

Cut the bottom off the container then decorate to make an elephant.  You can use felts or stick on bits of coloured paper for a bright design.

School Holidays with the Arts Centre

Art Ideas

Wanting some simple art ideas for home? Don't have many art resources on hand? Then perhaps try one of these ideas which you can do with very little equipment.

1) Shadow Art

Use toys or people and draw round shadow shapes.  You can move your creatures along or see what happens throughout the day as the sun moves. Try doing it with chalk on the pavement too.

2) Colouring In

Draw your own pictures or get someone else to straw them and you colour in. Mindfulness colouring books are also great for relaxing and wellbeing. If you don't have your own books or pages her is a downloadable colouring in book from a decal store in NZ (if you have a printer at home)

3) Paper Weaving 

Weaving paper is lots of fun.  You can use magazines for this, old books or paper of any kind.  Even try using brown paper bags from the supermarket.  Fabric or ribbon works well.

4) Nature Weaving

Have you ever tried weaving outside?   You can use flax, leaves, twigs or what ever you have around your local environment.  You can make a weaving loom from branches and away you go. O if you have a fence with gaps, weave in and out it that (check with your parents first). Another great way to weave is with a large piece of chicken wire if there is any in your garage.

5) Painted Rocks.  

Go for a hunt in the garden or down by the stream and find some great rocks to paint.  If you don't have paint at home use one of these recipes. Make paint

You can use vivids or felt pens to go over the top to write things on them.  Paint test pots are good too if you have them.

6 ) Environmental Art

You don't have to have art equipment at home to do this activity.  Head outside and gather up stones, sticks, leaves of different colours and make your own artworks.  You can take a photograph to show and remember your work, then you can return it back to nature.  Get outside and get inspired!

7) Explore Tate Gallery for Kids

This link is super cool.  Explore Tate galleries and try some of the art ideas. Look at artworks, take a quiz or just browse the gallery. something for every age and artist here.

Chalk Art

Chalk can be lots of fun for art.
You don't even have to have it at home as you can make your own.

Puffy Sidewalk Chalk Paint

Puffy Sidewalk Chalk Paint Ingredients
1 Cup four
1 cup water
1 tablespoon dish soap - just about any dish soap will work
5-10 drops food colouring or washable paint

How to make Sidewalk chalk Paint
In a large mixing bowl stir together the flour and water until there are no lumps.
Stir int eh dish soap to the flour mixture
Add food colouring of your choice,  until the desired colour is achieved.
Pour the mixture into your squeeze bott.e.
Give the kids their new sidewalk paint and let them have fun.
Use the paint on the same day you make it, this recipe doesn't save well... it will explode if you leave it closed.
If you are making multiple colours, make each colour in a different bowl or one data time and pour into the bottles and then make the next colour.

Chalky Ideas

1) Decorate your driveway or footpath outside your house pictures and patterns.

2) Draw hopscotch and find a stone and play at home.

3) Practice writing your letters and numbers in chalk. 

4) Draw some of the insects and bugs you find around the garden or draws a garden for yourself.

5) Draw a giant checker board and find some stones as the checkers.  Play a game with your family.

6) Create a sensory path to follow and have others do it too.  You can walk, jump hop along  it.
